“Absolutely delighted with this company. I broke my hip and whilst I was in hospital my daughter contacted Sutton Stairlifts. They came to the property, which has a longer-than-average staircase and advised us on the type of stairlift to suit my needs. They installed a refurbished stairlift promptly and efficiently. The engineers were knowledgeable, polite and reassuring.”

“Sutton Stairlifts were extremely helpful and I would certainly recommend you give them a call. They offered great advice, and a number of options - without any hard sell, and went the extra mile to help us. They managed to attend to the site to install it within a couple of days of my initial call. Good, old-fashioned customer service.”

A Guide to Regular Stairlift Care & After Sales Service

Right from day one after installation of your stairlift you’ll no doubt be singing its praises and wondering how you ever managed without it!

Whether you are enjoying the ease and convenience of a stairlift on a temporary or permanent basis, the thought of it breaking down is dismaying, so we know you’ll want to take good care of your trusty transporter.

We’ve put together some hints and tips about how you can keep your stairlift running smoothly between its regular services, along with some advice about how to make the most of Suttons Stairlifts renowned after-sales service.

Your Personal Stairlift Care Checklist

Let’s start with what you can do to care for your stairlift – and if this includes tasks you can’t manage safely yourself, be sure to have a family member, friend or carer come in to run through this list for you:

  • Daily inspection: visually inspect the tracks, carriage, seat, footrest and controls for damage, loose parts or obstructions before you climb on for your first ride of the day.
  • Track cleaning: Add cleaning (sweep, wipe-down or vacuum) of the stairlift tracks to your regular house-keeping chores to keep them clear of dust, debris, pet hair and obstructions.
  • Battery Maintenance: Always ensure your battery-powered stairlift is parked correctly for recharging to take place, and keep an eye on the battery condition and performance.
  • Stairlift Power: Keep your stairlift plugged into the mains – unplugging won’t save energy, but can in fact damage the battery pack and shorten battery life.
  • Keep the stairs clear: Obstacles in the path of your stairlift will activate safety sensors and bring it to a stop.
  • Respect your stairlift: Ensure everyone in the household, especially children, know not to abuse your stairlift. It’s important to not to overload it beyond the stated weight capacity.
  • Annual Service: A professional engineer should check and service your stairlift to keep it running smoothly and identify any wear and tear issues.

Stairlift Do’s and Don’ts

Here’s some tips from the experts on how to get the most out of your stairlift, and stay safe while using it:

  • Familiarise yourself with the user manual.
  • Always wear the seatbelt and put your feet on the footrest.
  • Don’t lean or tilt your body while riding on the stairlift, for safety’s sake.
  • Avoid carrying liquids on a stairlift (unless in a lidded container). Spilt liquids can damage the components of the lift.
  • Preferably don’t wear loose or draped clothing, or blankets, when riding on the stairlift because these can become caught in the mechanism and interfere with the lift function.
  • It’s wise to carry a mobile phone with you if you’re using the stairlift while home alone, just in case you get stuck or have an accident in transit.
  • Never tinker with your stairlift mechanics – or allow anyone other than a professional qualified stairlift engineer to do so.
  • Don’t use corrosive cleaning products on your stairlift. The user manual will probably advise what products are best to use, or you can consult your expert installer.

Stairlift Do’s and Don’ts

When you invest in renting or buying a new or reconditioned stairlift from an established, reputable company like Suttons Stairlifts, you can expect to receive reliable and prompt after sales service. This should start with a generous warranty, and be backed up with an efficient stairlift servicing and repairs department that responds quickly to calls for help in the unlikely event of a stairlift breakdown.

Stairlift troubleshooting on the phone is the first step to discovering why your stairlift is malfunctioning, and usually an engineer can guide you through resolving the problem quickly and easily.

If basic checks fail to resolve your stairlift issue, then a repair appointment can be scheduled as soon as possible.

A crucial part of caring for your stairlift after installation is to ensure it undergoes a service and safety check at least once a year. This doesn’t take long, and can prevent problems developing.

With the right care and maintenance from experienced engineers you can ride your stairlift with confidence for many years.

If you need any help or advice regarding stairlift servicing, safety checks and maintenance in Devon or Somerset, or indeed if your stairlift breaks down, Suttons Stairlifts is ready, willing and able to assist you. Please get in touch.
